We know what we’re doing!

Here are some tips to help ease your anxiety and make your first kayaking experience a safe and enjoyable one:

River Queen Voyages is a great choice for first-time kayakers and experienced paddlers alike to enjoy the water in downtown Nashville.

  1. Start with a guided tour or lesson

Renting a kayak from a hands-on outfitter like River Queen Voyages is a great option for first-timers. Having a little tutorial and knowing someone is looking out for you can help you feel more comfortable and confident on the water. River Queen Voyages offers a guided tour with our kayak scavenger hunt, and every rental comes with a lifejacket and Kayaking 101 instructions. Our experienced crew will provide you with all the necessary equipment and safety instructions, and are happy to help if you have any questions or are feeling nervous!

  2. Choose a calm and safe location

Shelby Park is a calm and safe location to start your kayaking experience. The Cumberland River is a class 1 flatwater river with no rocks, rapids, or strainers along the route into downtown Nashville.

  3. Wear a life jacket

Always wear a life jacket while kayaking. It is important for your safety, even if you are a good swimmer. Lifejackets are required by all outfitters on the Cumberland River in downtown Nashville, and compliance is enforced by the TWRA. Not only will a lifejacket keep you safe should anything go awry, but it will help you avoid a hefty fine!

  4. Paddle with a buddy

If you're feeling nervous, paddle with a partner who has kayaking experience. This can help you feel more secure and confident. If you’d like to be in the same boat as your friend, book one of our tandem (two-person) kayaks! Don’t have any adventurous buddies? Not a problem. Our routes are public, so there is a high probability there will be others out on the water during your paddle.

  5. Take breaks when you need to

Don't feel like you have to stay on the water or actively paddle the entire time. Take breaks as needed; let the current float you a little, or pull off to the side to rest and come back to the water when you feel ready. The Cumberland River is a flatwater river— there are no rapids or obstacles, so it is the safest level for beginner paddling! It is also a straight, direct route with no real alternative paths, so you don’t have to worry about getting lost.

  6. Be aware of your surroundings

As with any other activity, you will want to stay aware of your surroundings while out on the water! One exciting part about kayaking on the Cumberland River in Downtown Nashville is sharing it with other commercial vessels like our Pedal Pontoon, the Pontoon Saloon, and the General Jackson, as well as impressive haulers like Ingram and Hines Furlong barges. It would be difficult for any of those vessels to sneak up on you, but you’ll still want to make sure you’re staying present so you don’t end up getting honked at! That will surely harsh any mellow your relaxing kayak adventure had produced.

  7. Stay hydrated and protected from the sun

The heat can sneak up on you! Bring plenty of water and wear sun protection such as sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. The last thing you want is to be uncomfortable on your paddle. Set yourself up for success by coming prepared!

Remember that kayaking is a fun and rewarding outdoor activity. With the right preparation and precautions, you can have a safe and enjoyable kayaking experience with River Queen Voyages in downtown Nashville.
